Whenever I have doubts I think....what if I were to have my own physical store or a website....ebay is still cheaper with its worldwide buying eyes. It's the way to go for sure. Remember too, that it's all in the numbers. The more you list the more prospective buying eyes you will get.

That's true. Whatever we feel about eBay, they have the customers.

I come from a different perspective and understand SEO very well. I have been a member of ETSY for over two years now and I am hear to tell you I sell more on ebay faster than on etsy. ETSY doesn't bring customers. Ebay does!

Hi there Jeanette.........Having your own site is fantastic "IF" you can get traffic to it. It's takes time and possible money (advertising, hiring help) but by no means should anyone give up their dream to do so. It's just one needs to know going in what is involved. Some sell on eBay for the sole purpose of directing people to their own site.

eBay has traffic already built in so it's a no brainer as far as that goes.

Good luck!

So, Bridgette - are you saying that having your own website would be a plus, but not so much a necessity to sell on e-bay? I am trying to gear up to buying and selling on e-bay full-time (I've done a few items in the past, but not on a regular basis), and want to get it going in the right direction right off the bat.

Brigitte, I'm in the same dilemma. I've had a ProStores web site (an eBay company) for almost a year and it's not paying its own way. I understand that it takes time to get found out there, but I'm seriously considering dropping it. The good thing is that everything I put on eBay automatically goes on the web site, so it's easy to manage, but the vast majority of my sales come from eBay.

I agree with you Brigitte. SEO is the most important thing when setting up a website. Why do you think all those initial internet businesses went bust 10 years ago? They didn't understand the importance of SEO. However, I would add that if you are a serious eBay seller, you should consider having your own website. When I say "serious," I mean someone who sells to make a living. When you have your own website, you can do whatever you want and not be at the mercy of other powers-that-be. You create your own rules. But even with your own website, you should use eBay as a lead generator for your business. eBay is so large that you cannot ignore it if you are operating a business.
